Doll Cake

100_2252, originally uploaded by sundeepswati.

One doesn't have much of a choice when you have to bake a cake for your 7 year old daughter who is fascinated with Barbies ...

Well, I had no alternative when she came to me and said "Mamma you will make a doll cake for me , isn't it " ...that was it and I really had to think hard to manage to fulfill her wishes and dreams.....

I have enjoyed myself thoroughly in the whole making of this cake and it kept me awake one whole night to be able to complete it..But believe me it was an accomplishment in itself and gave me immense satisfaction to be able to make it the way I wanted it to be.

The doll's dress is made completely with fondant with some embossing and painting on the gown. The face and hands are that of the plastic doll.

The hat is made of fondant and I was totally thrilled about it..I made some miniature roses to embellish the hat..I got so carried away with them that they also went on as a brooch and also on the gown ..This whole venture took me back to childhood days and its a terrific feeling....

A close up of the baskets ...The baskets and lace work on the edges of the cake are made from royal icing and the baskets have been filled with fondant flowers.

It's a nice doll cake, loved the baskets. I guess you tried to add all techniques - embossing, painting, flower making, filigree, fondant, royal icing - quite heavy i'd say..no wonder it kept you awake half the night!!:)) Imagine if I were to say maybe next time you should try your hand at figure modelling - cos you have everything else covered:) Way to go gal...keep it up..Simran must be one happy baby - a fairy tale come true:)) Whatta mama!!!!

OH Swati I am so glad I could help you.
Swati I have been thinking about you and your creations because I have to make a cake for my nephew's birthday and the theme is Tom and Jerry, I could not find any figurine to decorate the cake so decided to make the figurine with hard fondant, i am scared for this, because I have never made sugar paste modeling before :s . I hope to make something nice to show you how your site inspires me, you make pieces of art for every cake.

Did you use a net nail for the baskets? They turned out beautifully.

I don't personally care for Barbie cakes, and prefer to make my own doll cakes but if my daughter asked for one, I would have stayed up a night to finish it also. I adore the tiny roses. This is a memory she will have forever!

Well done.

Did you use a net nail for the baskets? They are wonderful! I don't personally care for Barbie cakes and prefer to make my own dolls, but if I had a daughter and she came to me and asked for one, I'd hope it turned out as lovely as yours. Your tiny flowers are lovely and the lace work - ohlala!

this did not show up on my reader!!!

It looks real good..I had a barbie cake for my daugher's 1st b'day...Each detail has come out real well! The shadings on the hat, the dress et al...are all lovely! How did you paint the flowers on the dress??

Thanks Caked Crusader, Vimmi and TBC

You leave me flattered..am so glad you all like it!!

Swati said...

Dear Anitha

Thanks for the appreciation..The lace pieces do call for some patience but its worth it..Am so intrigued with royal icing and the wonderful things that can be made with it..Its just that royal icing even after drying is very fragile to handle so have to make loads of lace pieces at one time :)

Swati said...

Thanks Neha...Waiting to see what you have been doing too!!

Swati said...

Dear Kate
I really appreciate your stopping by my blog and leaving such a sweet note for me..
I wish my daughter will pick this art from me...she is too young right now though!!!

Swati said...

Hi Shirl

Thanks for stopping by dear....Well, for the basket I did not have a net nail so I first made the basket with pastillage and then royal iced it the way I wanted!!
Even I loved the tiny roses :)

Swati said...

Thanks Sagari!!

Hi Rachel

Thanks for noticing all the details...Regarding the flowers on the dress..I first embossed it and then painted each one individually with food colors...One can even do a free hand painting on it ...You need to be careful about the amount of water being used as fondant would melt otherwise..You can even use alcohol instead of water..I use vodka as it evaporates fast..Hope this helps!! :)

Swati said...

Hey Viji

Am touched reading your lovely note...thanks a ton!!

I'd like to visiting your amazing blog very often and penetrating through your posts, pics, but I have a big problem. Maybe only my computer is the problem, I don't know. The problem is that your blog needs soooo much time to be open.
I think that BlogRoll is couse!
I'm not sure, but my advise is - ask other people. Fast opening is very important.
Your blog is very, very beautiful and worth to be here.
Try to solve this problem.

Good luck!

I am simply fascinated by this art, and how I *love* the flowers. The realism of your orchids, peonies, gerbera and sweetpeas (among others) is really superb. These blooms are so much more practical for cake decorating, too; no worries about poison plants or pesticides.

I thank all of you to take out time to visit my small space here...I appreciate each one of your comments and they all mean a lot to me..They inspire me, encourage me and help me to get better and improvise myself.

My journey of sugarcraft has brought about a feeling of completeness in me and satisfies the artist in me. It gives an immense joy to create something each time ...sometimes just for yourself and mostly for others.

Sugarcraft is a time consuming art but once you immerse yourself in it, it takes you off to a completely different world where comparision and competition really dont matter.

There is nothing called a perfect cake or a perfect piece of art work ...Anything created with love and affection is beyond comparision..We are all good at whatever we do but a word of appreciation boosts the innerself and strenghtens the confidence to try something difficult or better.
We all are a child within and as a child looks at the eyes of parents or teachers for approval and reactions even we, adults do the same thing..Look for approval and reactions to what one has put efforts in. It may not be the best, but we have put our best in it and to me thats what really matters.

In other words, all your comments are a treasure !!
I earnestly thank all and look forward to have you here in the future too.

Thanks once again!!
